Children stabbed in Winnipeg apartment

Two children one an infant were stabbed and critically wounded by a relative inside an apartment complex in downtown Winnipeg on Thursday.

Two children one an infant were stabbed and critically woundedby a relativeinside anapartment complex in downtown Winnipeg on Thursday.

Afour-month-old baby and a nine-year-old boy were stabbed in a fourth-floorsuite of a government-runhousing complex at 355 Kennedy Street around 5:30 p.m. CT,police said.

The children were taken to hospital in critical condition but later upgraded to stable.

A 33-year-old woman in the apartment was also stabbed. She is also in stable condition, said Winnipeg police Sgt. Kelly Dennison.

A secondwoman, who appeared to be in her late 30s,was taken into police custody. She was handcuffed and placed in the back of a police car.

The woman is related to thevictims but police would not say how.

Neighbours said she is the mother of the children.

Melissa Ramsey,who livesin the apartment block, said shearrived home from work toseethe nine-year-oldvictim standing injured and screamingin the lobby of the building just before police and paramedicsarrived.

The boy seemed "scared and was breathing heavy," Ramsey said.He appeared to have a stomachwound,she added.

"He was showing security his stomach and he was stabbed," Ramsey said.

The child abuse unit of the Winnipeg Police Serviceis investigating.

The buildingis home to aManitoba Housing officeand adaycare centre.
