The tweets from Bergen prompted backlash, and some support, from people on Twitter, namely because she recently said she believes engagement with opposition party membersshould be done in a respectful way.

In October, Bergen announced onCBC's Up to Speedshe was in the running to be theinterim leader of the Conservative Party of Canada.

"Canadians are looking to us to be a strong opposition, to stay true to our Conservative values, principles, to good strong fiscal policy, to holding Justin Trudeau and the ... new Liberal government to account," she said Oct. 27.

"That's something that I'm committed to doing, and at the same time being a strong and effective communicator, asking the tough questions, but asking them in a respectful and a reasonable way."

That position has since been filled by Rona Ambrose.
