Canada Day violence leaves 2 dead in Winnipeg

Two people are dead and another is in critical condition after violent incidents in Winnipeg on Canada Day.

The first death happened at about 3 a.m. on Donald Street, just off Broadway, in the city's downtown.

Michelle Stobbe, 28, was shot in the upper body. According to police,a 35-year-old man washandling a 9 mm handgun that waslegally registered to him, when Stobbe grabbed at his arm and the gun discharged.

The man called 911 and remained on scene when police arrived.

He has been chargednumerous weapons offences and remains in custody.

The other death happened just four blocks away, onMain Street nearBroadwayacross from the Via Rail train station,at about10:15 p.m.

Two men were stabbed, not far from where thousands of people were gathering to take in the Canada Day fireworks at The Forks.

Both victims wererushed to hospitalwhereone died. The other is in critical condition.

No further information is available at this time.

Police are still investigating.
