Benefit social for injured jockey Alyssa Selman raises $30K

Hundreds of people turned out for a benefit social in honour of Winnipeg jockey Alyssa Selman on Sunday, raising an estimated $30,000.

Hundreds of people turned out for abenefit social in honour of Winnipeg jockey Alyssa Selman on Sunday, raising an estimated $30,000.

Of that amount, theJockeys Guildof Canada contributed $10,000.

Selmanwas thrown from her horsein a race at Assiniboia Downs last month. She suffereda spinal cordinjury andhaslost the use of her legs.

The fundraiser, at the Downs, wasorganized by thehorse racing community. About 750 people showed up and more than 40 prizes were donated for a silent auction.

On Monday, organizers told CBC News the final tally is not in yet, but the total is estimated to be over $30,000.
