North End fire that sent woman to hospital set deliberately, police say

A woman remains in hospital in critical condition after a house fire in the North End that investigators now believe was deliberately set.

A woman remains in hospital in criticalcondition after a house fire in the North End that investigators now believe was deliberately set.

Emergency crews went to a home on Aberdeen Avenue, between Powers and Salter streets, on Tuesday after reports of a fire.

Firefighters found a 29-year-old woman in the home who was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Winnipeg police Const. Jason Michalyshensaid an investigation led by the homicide unithas found the blaze was likely set on purpose.

"We're working incredibly hard to resolve this matter," he said.

Police have attended the home in the past, Michalyshensaid.Police were still atthe scene investigatingon Wednesday.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call police at 204-786-8477.

"Ourfocus isto learn more about who potentially was involved or anyone who may have seen anything before, during or after the event,"Michalyshensaid, adding the investigation is being treated as a homicide even though the victimis still alive.
