Waterloo region is up against Ottawa, Sudbury and the Niagara region to host the games.

Advocates have said the games would bring tourism to the region.

"When you look at us in comparison to the other communities that are bidding for it, the population base surrounding Waterloo Region is tremendous," Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic said in January.

"It's also a great partnership between three cities in one region coming together saying 'we want to jointly do this and showcase our community to the country.'"

Olympic boxer Mandy Bujold joined the bid committee and said the games would be good for the local economy.

"If anyone can do this, it's us," Bujold said. "I know this community has always backed me in my athletic career and I think bringing something big like this, a national sporting event to this region, will be a great thing for this area."
