Parts of Walter Bean Trail reopen after flood damage, but some are still closed

Parts of the Walter Bean Trail have reopened after the City of Kitchener closed the parts of thetrail on June 30 for needed repairsdue toflood waterdamage.

Over 100 millimetres of rainat the end of June damaged some sections of the trail and submerged others. Rushing water also created deep ruts and left debris on the trail.

Even though parts of the trail reopened, the following areas are still closed:

• Old Mill Road at Mill Ruins.
• Doon Valley golf course, including the pedestrian bridge over the river expected to reopen next week.
• Deer Ridge at the pumping station.
• Deer Ridge behind the former Grand Valley Nursery.
• Kuntz Park.
• Kiwanis Park.

Kiwanis Park continues to have a significant amount of debris. The entire park will remain closed as staff continue to clean up and repair the lower park, playground, dog park, volleyball courts and trail, saida release from the City ofKitchener.

In total, about 19 km of trails were damaged, the release said.

"We know how much residents value Kitchener's parks and trails," said Denise McGoldrick, director of operations and environmental services in therelease.

"We appreciate their patience while staff continues working to make the affected areas safe for their enjoyment."

Staff will continue to reopen the remainder sections of the trail when it's possible. However, there may be recurring closures so that staff can dothe work needed to fully open the trail.

The Walter Bean Trail runs along the Grand River throughKitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge andWoolwichTownship.
