Walter Bean Trail closed for flood damage repairs

The City of Kitchener has closed the Walter Bean Trail until further notice. As flood waters continue to recede, Kitchener city staff found segments of the trail that needed repair.

As flood waters continue to recede, Kitchener city staff found segments of the trail that needed repair and closed it June 30. On Friday, sections of the trail re-opened but some still need work done and remain closed. (Google Maps)

The Kitchener portion of the Walter Bean Trail is closed until further notice as it awaits repairs due to flood damage from last week's rainfall.

The trail runs close to the Grand River through the cities of Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge and WoolwichTownship. But as flood waters continue to recede, Kitchener city staff found segments of the trail that needed repair.

"There are some parts of the trail that are still entirely underwater," Victoria Raab, director of corporate communications for the City of Kitchener told CBC News.

"There are some sections of the trail where there are deep ruts as a result of water rushing through and then rushing out. There are some sections where debri has been pushed up onto the trail from the flooding."

There are parts of the trail that were not affected by the flood. But due to the number of sections that need repair, staff decided it was safer to close the whole trail.

"Because of that inconsistency and therefore due to our inability to section off a [selected] part of the trail, the safer decision was to close the entire trail," Raab said.

Signage and barricades have been put up along the trail to notify users of the closure. Raab said they hope to have repairs done by the end of next week.
