Swimmers warned after rabid bat dives into Belwood Lake

Swimmers who visited Belwood Lake on Tuesday are being warned they may have been exposed to rabies.

A rabid bat dove into the quarry swimming area of Belwood Lake around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Several swimmers tried to rescue the bat, which was retrieved by workers with the Grand River Conservation Authority.

The battested positive for rabies.

Anyone who came in contact with the bat might have been exposed to rabies and should immediately seek medical attention,local public health officials said.

Rabies is a fatal virus that's transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal, usually by bites.

Raccoons, skunks, foxes and bats are among the common carriers.

Two skunks tested positive for rabies in Elora over the summer.

Public health officials are reminding people to stay away from all wildlife, including stray cats and dogs.
