St. Mary's Hospital receives $3.6M to do more cardiac procedures

The provincial government has given $3.6 million to St. Mary's General Hospital in Kitchener to increase the number of cardiac procedures done at the health care facility.

As well, the hospital will get $500,000 for more intensive care beds.

Daiene Vernile, MPP for Kitchener Centre, made the announcement Friday.

She said the investment will "improve the overall health" of residents in Waterloo region.

"These additional supports will showcase the region as a leader in cardiac care in the province," Vernile said in a release about the announcement of new funds.

Don Shilton, president of St. Mary's General Hospital, said they were grateful for the money, which will help them "respond to the growing needs of cardiac and critical care patients in this region."

The release said the $3.6 million for 2016-17 will help the hospital fund 793 additional cardiac procedures.
