1,000 solar eclipse glasses from Guelph libraries snapped up in a day

The 1,000 solar eclipse glasses being handed out for free from the Guelph Public Library were all gone in 24 hours.

The glasses were available Wednesday morning at all library locations. By Wednesday night the library warned they were almost all gone and confirmed they were completely out by Thursday morning.

Several people thanked the library for the giveaway, because you need to wear protective glasses in order to view the solar eclipse Monday afternoon. Regular sunglasses will not protect your retinas.

In this region, the partial eclipse on Monday will start around 1:40 p.m. and the maximum partial eclipse will be at 2:32 p.m. It will end by 3:50 p.m.

The eclipse is the first to cross the U.S. coast to coast in almost a century. The celestial event has prompted a lot of hype and hysteria.

There have been warnings from retailers, including Amazon, about counterfeit eclipse glasses that are being sold.
