Kitchener church's housing project receives $5.5M in federal and provincial funding

A housing project in downtown Kitchener that will see a church renovate unused classroom spaces into affordable housing units has received $5.5 million in funding.

The funds were announced Friday as part of theCanada-Ontario Community Housing Initiative. Through the $46-million initiative, the federal government will provide more than $30 million and more than $15 million will come from the province.

FederalMinister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion Ahmed Hussen was in Kitchener for the announcement along with Ontario'sMinister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Steve Clark as well aslocal politicians.

St. Peter's Lutheran Church on Queen Street Northannounced in 2022it wanted to create 41 affordable housing unitsat its downtown location. Last week, the church received $8.9 million in funding from the Region of Waterloo for the project.

The goal of the project is to have it ready for people to move in by summer 2024.
