Gun amnesty nets 49 firearms in Guelph

Policein Guelph collected49 firearms and 2,500 rounds of ammunition during last month'sgun amnesty.

The firearms included five handguns, 18 shotguns and 26 rifles, police announced Friday.

The gun amnesty allowed members of the public to turn in unwanted guns or ammunition. The program has now ended, but police are encouraging anyone with unwanted weapons to contact officers to retrieve them.

"Police retain the ability to exercise discretion regarding weapons related charges at all times, not just during the month long event," the force said in a release.

"The public is reminded that no one should ever deliver guns, ammunition or military ordinance directly to police facilities."

Police Chief Jeff DeRuytersaid collecting the firearms and ammunition ensures"they don't get into the wrong hands and this helps contribute to the safety of our community."
