Construction crews will soon be spotted out and about in Waterloo region as essential construction and maintenance work resumes, according to the region's chief administrative officer Mike Murray.

Essential work will include construction of roads, water mains, sewers and other municipal services, he said.

"Our community continues to have essential needs and the region continues to serve those essential needs," Murray said at a media briefing Friday, noting that the safety of construction workers will be a priority.

Some examples of projects that will continue include:

  • Traffic signal maintenance.
  • Sign replacement and installation.
  • Line painting.
  • Roadway, surface and gravel shoulder repairs and maintenance.
  • Street sweeping.
  • Debris pickup.
  • Sewer and ditch maintenance.

Murray said some work will likely be easier given the lack of traffic on the road. He noted that workers will have some additional challenges in following new safety and physical distancing guidelines.

"As the pandemic continues to evolve, we'll continue to evaluate and re-assess our approach with the safety of residents and workers as a priority," Murray said.
