Cyclist in critical condition after being hit in Guelph, man charged

A woman in her 70s is in a Hamilton hospital in critical condition after she was hit by a car Thursday in Guelph. Police said the driver fled the scene. Now, a 35-year-old Guelph man has been charged with failing to stop after an accident causing bodily harm.

A woman in her 70s remains in hospital in critical condition after she was hit by a car Thursday afternoon in Guelph.

Police say the woman was cycling on Victoria Road N. in front of St. James Catholic High School when she was hit by a Ford sedan between 12:45 p.m. and 1:15 p.m.

"The driver of the sedan quickly left the scene without checking on the cyclist," police said in a release.

The woman was taken to a Hamilton hospital where she remains.

The car believed to have hit the woman was located at a home near Guelph's downtown about an hour later. A man was located at an address in the city's east end at 3:40 p.m. and arrested.

A 35-year-old Guelph man is charged with failing to stop after an accident causing bodily harm. He will appear in court Oct. 18.

Victoria Road remained closed for several hours as police investigated. Officers want to speak with anyone who has information or video of the area at the time of the collision.

2nd cyclist hit near schools in 2 days

It was the second cyclist hit near a school in two days in Guelph.

On Wednesday morning, the first day of school, a 15-year-old on a bicycle was hit in front of a school in the city's west end. The teen was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

In that case, a24-year-old Owen Sound woman has beencharged with careless driving.

Police issued a reminder to "all motorists to obey all speed limits and be aware of all road users."
