Why are naloxone kits not available in all B.C. schools?

Fentanyl overdose deaths have led to a public health emergency, the provincial health officer calls it a crisis. And yet Naloxone kits - the overdose antidote - are not available in all B.C. schools.

Naloxone is a medication that reverses or blocks the effects of opioid medication, like fentanyl.

It is saving lives.

So why isn't naloxone available in schools across B.C?

Fentanyl is being blamed for tripling the number of overdose deaths this year.

It's been declared a public health emergency in B.C.

For the answers Daybreak heard from Trish Smillie, the Director of student support services in the Kamloops Thompson School District, Dr. Perry Kendall, B.C.'s Provincial Health Officer, and a pharmacist who walked us through how to administer naloxone.
