Niagara police name victim of alleged homicide in Welland, Ont.

Niagara police say Mathew Theal, 24, is the person who died in a homicide in Welland, Ont., on Sept. 17. On Tuesday, the Niagara Regional Police Service charged Theal's partner, a 19-year-old Welland woman, with second-degree murder in his death.

Niagara police say Mathew Theal, 24, is the person who died in a homicide in Welland, Ont., on Sept. 17.

On Tuesday, the Niagara Regional Police Service arrested and charged a 19-year-old Welland woman with second-degree murder in Theal's death, police spokespersonStephanie Sabourin told CBC Hamilton in an email. She said the two were in a "domestic relationship."

First responders found Theal with "life-threatening injuries" in a residence at Broadway and Pietz Avenue in the city's southwest, police said in a Tuesday news release. Someone had called for an ambulance.

Sabourin said Theal was injured in the home.

CBC Hamilton asked how he was injured and what led up to that, but Sabourin said "to protect the integrity of the investigation," police will not share that information.

First responders took Theal to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, policesaid. Theysaid Theal is also from Welland.
