Hamilton police are investigating numerous reports of sexual violence and sexual harassment at Waterdown District High School.

The service didn't say how many allegations it was investigating nor when the allegations are said to have occurred. Spokesperson Jackie Penman confirmed in an email the name of the school involvedand that the investigationis ongoing but saidthe suspect is "not in a position of authority at the school."

Police said in a release Tuesday the investigation comes after several victims came forward.

Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board wrote in a letter to families it could not comment on a police matter.

"We consider the safety and well-being of every student and staff member our top priority," read the board letter.

"If you are a survivor of sexual assault, remember the abuse was not your fault and there is no time limit on reporting the abuse to police."

Police said in a media release the service believes all survivors of sexual violence "respect their choice in when they report an incident, where and how."

"There is no guaranteed way to prevent sexual assault. Sharing the details of these assaults is intended to provide the community information, and people are encouraged to trust their instincts."
