Senior lost home to fraudsters who took $374K, Brantford police say

Four people have been charged, police say, after a Brantford senior lost her home to fraudsters who took $374,000.

Four people have been charged, police say, after a Brantford senior lost her home to fraudsters who took $374,000.

After a joint investigation, police services in Brantford and Waterloo say they have charged and arrested four people with "an organized renovation and mortgage fraud"that led to a Brantford senior losing her home.

In a press release sent out Monday, police said the incident took place between 2021 and 2022 and involved predatory mortgages.

A 29-year-old Oakville man, a34-year-old man from Hamilton and a 60-year-old woman from Toronto have been charged, police say, with one count of fraud, "over $5,000 and Possession Property Obtained by Crime over $5,000."

A39-year-old man from Brampton is charged with"one count of Swearing Purported Affidavit, contrary to the Criminal Code."

Inthe press release police said to be wary of "unsolicited people knocking at your door and use caution when asked to sign any documents that you are unsure of. We would also like to take this opportunity to issue a reminder to check on vulnerable seniors in the community to help protect them against fraudsters attempting to take advantage of vulnerable persons."
