'What is it going to take for people to stop calling 911 for animal complaints?:' OPP

The service said calling the police to deal with a nuisance animal ties up the phone lines at the communications centre and ties up officers.

Ontario Provincial Police are being "inundated" with 911 calls from people in Norfolk Countycomplaining about animals.

"WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE FOR PEOPLE TO STOP CALLING 9-1-1 FOR ANIMAL COMPLAINTS?" Norfolk County OPP officials wrote in an email.

The OPP is "being inundated with calls for service from members of the public wanting police to deal with animal complaints," the email said.

The call that led to this plea to the public came on Wednesday evening.

A Waterford resident saw a deer in a Waterford deer park chewing on a bag and called 911 worried for the animal because of "unknown contents in the bag."

"The OPP does not have the equipment to trap and house live animals or transport wild animals,"Inspector Joseph Varga, the Norfolk County OPP detachment commander, said in the release.

"Calling the police to deal with a nuisance animal ties up the phone lines at the communications centre and ties up law enforcement officerswhen they could be focusing on other issues in the community. A private animal removal service should be contacted instead of calling the police."
