A 40-year-old man who had barricaded himself ina residence inOhsweken, Ont., and shot at police was "struck multiple times" in an "exchange of gunfire" after he exited the residence, according to theSpecial Investigations Unit (SIU).

The man was then transported to hospital for treatment, the SIU said, though no details on his condition were given.

TheSIU update comes after police said early Wednesday morningthey were respondingto a "barricaded individual" onChiefswoodRoad inOhsweken, part of Six Nations of the Grand River.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said around 11 a.m. ET that the"active weapons incident" that began overnight Tuesday and prompted police to tell residents to shelter in placehadbeen "resolved."

As a result of the police interaction, the SIU the province's police watchdog invoked its mandate, the OPP said.

The SIUinvestigates when police conductmay have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assaultorthe discharge of a firearm at a person.

Six Nations ElectedChief Mark Hill thanked Six Nations Police, the OPP and the SIUfor their "swift and effective" response that resolved the incident "peacefully."

He indicated mental health issues were at play.

"The incident that occurred is a reminder of the challenges individuals may face in dealing with mental health issues," Hill said in a statement. "We encourage all community members to support one another, offering empathy, understanding and resources for those who may be in need."

Incident began Tuesday night

Sgt. Ed Sanchuksaid the incident started around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

He said OPP response teams and York Regional Police aviation services were called to assist the Six Nations Police Service after "its officers came under weapons fire" on ChiefswoodRoad between Fifth and Sixth Line inOhsweken.

The SIUlater saida man hadrefusedto exit a residence onChiefswoodRoad.

Sanchuksaid thebarricaded person"continued to discharge a firearm at police officers overnight."

Residents of the area hadbeen told to shelter in place and motorists were told toavoid the area.

The SIU saidOPP officers then "breached the front door of the residence, and the man exited." There was then an "exchange of gunfire, and the man was struck multiple times."

Road to remainclosed for investigation

Sanchuksaid the "incident" was resolved shortly before 9:30 a.m.The OPP also said therewere no injuries to officers.

Staff Sgt.DerrickAnderson with Six Nations Police said Wednesday afternoon part ofChiefswood Road between Fifth and Sixth Line could remain closed for "up to a couple days" while the investigation continued.
