High school physics teacher wins St. Catharines mayoral race, full results for Niagara Region

New mayor of St. Catharines Mat Siscoe joins regional incumbent mayors Jim Diodati, Wayne Redekop, Frank Campion and Terry Ugulini in 2022's municipal election results.

High school teacher Mat Siscoe is the new mayor of St. Catharines, joining several mayors in the region who were elected back for anotherterm.

Siscoe won by a landslide in the race to replace WalterSendzik, who didn't run this time. Siscoe captured more than two-thirds of the vote in St. Catharines, well ahead of second-place finisher Mike Britton,who had about 25 per cent of the vote.

"The results of tonight's election are humbling," Siscoesaid Monday evening on Twitter. "Thank you for the trust you have placed in me to lead our city for the next four years. Our victory tonight is one to celebrate, but tomorrow, the real work begins."

Siscoe served St. Catharines as a Niagara regional councillor between 2018 and 2022 while also being a physics teacher atSaint Paul High School inNiagara Falls.

In Niagara Falls, Mayor Jim Diodatiwonby more than 10,000 votes over Sandra Marie MacKinnon. Diodati will serve his fourth term as Niagara mayor.

Port Colborne re-elected Bill Steele as mayor, with 3054 votes(62.84 per cent)defeating his brother Charles, the only challenger.Billenters his second term.The Steele brothers have not spoken to each otherin more than 30 years. Before he was elected mayor in 2018, Bill served as a city councillor for 17 years in Port Colborne.

There is a tie between EricBeauregardand Angie Desmaraisfor the second councillor spot in Port Colborne's ward 2. A recount will be held within 15 days. According to the 2022 Candidates Guide - Ontario municipal council and school board elections,if the two are still tied after the recount, the winner's name will bepickedout of a hat or a"suitable container."

In Thorold, Terry Ugulinialso won by a wide margin, defeating Damon Ford. Ford was the only candidate running against Ugulini and is a 21-year-old Brock University student. Ugulini said, "In this game, you never do anything aloneit takes teamwork... I had an excellent team."Ugulini thanked Ford forjoining the race and saidhe respected that Ford ran a positive campaign.

In Grimsby,Jeff Jordan returns for a second term as mayor, easily defeating John Dunstall by more than 5,400 votes. While in Fort Erie, Mayor Wayne Redekopwill returnfor his third term with more than two-thirds of voters supporting him. Peter Taras finished second.

Just 25 per cent of the elligible voters in Welland turned out to cast ballots on Monday. Most of those who didvoted for returning Mayor Frank Campion. He beat challenger Jeff Walters by a comfortable margin and will return for a third term.

West Lincoln elected former Ward3councillor Cheryl Ganann as their new mayor. Gannan won with 3429 votes, beating out controversial former mayor David Bylsma, who received 1075 votes.

Bylsmacame under criticism for attending the trucker convoy in Ottawa to support former West Lincoln ward twocouncillorHaroldJonker. In 2021, he emailed a St. Catharines woman, Emily Spanton, to ask her if the COVID-19 vaccine stopped her from menstruating.

Jonker lost his council seat by 180votes to Joann ChechalkonMonday night.

In Niagara-on-the-Lake, regional councillor Gary Zalepa is the nowLord Mayor Gary Zalepa, defeating incumbent Betty Disero. Disero was elected mayor in 2018. Zaleparan on a platform that included improving transit services in the region. He has also volunteered as a coach with local hockey and soccer teams.

In Pelham, Mayor Marvin Junkinwas re-elected for a second term. He defeated Frank Adamsonin a close race.

Brian Grant, a 40-year-old owner of a small business, is the new mayor of Wainfleet after he won election over incumbent Kevin Gibson by just 12 votes. Grant received1,067votes whileGibson collected1,055.
