2 people using Cannon Street bike lanes hit by vehicles

Police are investigating two collisions involving people in the Cannon Street bike lanes Monday.

The first happened around 8:30 a.m., at Cannon Street East and Mary Street.

According to police, a man was driving a milk truck on Mary Street, stopped, and proceeded to turn left from Mary onto Cannon.

It was then that the milk truck collided with a man on an E-Bike who was going eastbound in the Cannon bike lane.

The E-Bike driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries. Police didn't indicate who was at fault in the crash or who had the right of way, but say charges are pending.

E-Bikes are considered a bicycle under the Highway Traffic Act, police say.

The second collision happened at 1:45 p.m., at the intersection of Wentworth Street North and Cannon Street East.

According to police, a van was going west on Cannon,but when he tried to make a left turn onto Wentworth Street North, the van struck a woman who was going west in the bike lane.

The cyclist escaped with minor injuries, but was taken to hospital as a precaution, police say.

A 61-year-old Hamilton man was charged under the Highway Traffic act for not turning safely.

Since September 2014, there have been 16 collisions in the Cannon Street bike lanes involving E-Bikes, bicycles and scooters. Bike riders were charged in four of those incidents, the city says.

In all of2013, before the bike lanes were installed, there were six collisions involving bikes, scooters and E-Bikes. In that year, one bike rider was charged.
