A Hamilton cyclist was rushed to hospital with major injuries Wednesday afternoon after a collision with a dump truck in Waterdown, police say.

According to investigators, the incident happened just before noon in the area of Highway 5 and Hamilton Street. Police offered little initial information about what happened, but said that the man's injuries were significant.

"At this time Detectives have ruled out speed and alcohol as factors in this is collision," a police news release reads.

Const. Jerome Stewart said the truck that was involved in the crash didn't stop directly at the intersection where the point of impact happened, but came to a stop farther down the roadway. He could not say exactly how far.

"There's a lot of uncertainty at this time," he said. "They are not classifying it as a hit and run at this time."

Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.

"Due to the time of day and the amount of traffic on the roadway, police are confident there are witnesses that can assist with this investigation and their input would be greatly appreciated," the news release reads.

Roads in the area were closed for several hours, police say, but have since reopened.
