Hamilton sets record with 301 new COVID-19 cases and 1 more death

Hamilton is reporting a record 301 new daily cases of COVID-19 and one more death. The city now has a total of 1,645 active cases.

Yesterday's case count was an "underestimation" and today's isan "overestimation," a spokesperson forHamilton Public Health Services told CBC News.

"Case numbers are always subject to change and fluctuations are normal with any data reporting," spokesperson James Berry said in an email. "It's important to focus on the seven-day average and not on the day-to-day fluctuations."

It isnot clear if therecord number is the result of a data catch-up.

In neighbouring Brant County, health officials confirmed at a briefingtoday that both local and temporary foreignfarm workers will be eligiblefor vaccinations in the region starting next week.

Temporary foreign workers have been offered vaccinations upon arrival in this country for just under two weeks now. But they have not yet had access to vaccinations in Brant County,saidDr. Elizabeth Urbantke, Acting Medical Officer of Health.

"We have plans to offer vaccinations to this group along with local farm workers who work alongside this group next week," Urbantke said. "These will be the first doses for those who have missed being vaccinated on arrival."

The vaccinations which are designated for those working on farms with congregate living accommodations will be administered at a pop-up clinic in Burford, Ont.

Urbantkealso said health officials plan to vaccinate workers on farms without congregate living quarters in approximately two weeks.

The Brant County Federation of Agriculture welcomed the news.

"We're really excited ... that Brant County Health Unit has moved forward this quickly with this and we're putting out the word as fast as we can to our members," said BCFA Director,Sandra Vos.

Brant

Brant County is reporting 51 new cases and one additional death. The latest update puts the county's overall confirmed case count at 2,443.

Brant currently has 254 active cases and 11 of those peopleare now in hospital.

There have been 42,450 vaccination doses administered so far in the county.

Haldimand-Norfolk

Health officials in Haldimand-Norfolk reported 31 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday.

The counties currently have a total of 288 active cases. The death toll still stands at 40.

Administered vaccine doses are clocking in at 31,990 as of the latest update.

Halton

The region reported an increase of 131 cases in the past 24 hours. Halton has now recorded a total of 13,823 infections since the start of the pandemic.

One more person has died after contracting COVID-19, bringing the total number offatalities to 207.

Halton currently has 973 active cases of the coronavirus. The city of Burlington holds 269 of those cases they logged 54 new infections in the past day.

Halton has administered 153,970 vaccine doses as of the latest update.

Niagara

There are 199 new coronavirus cases in Niagara Region. One more person has also died.

The region has now recorded a total of 12,482 cases of COVID-19. 2,020 of those are currently active.

Niagara has so far administered 142,949 vaccination doses, which accounts for 28 percent of the regional population.

Six Nations

Six Nations of the Grand River reported an additional six cases in the past 24 hours. That brings their total case count to 466.The death toll still stands at ten.

There are 2,211 residents who have received one vaccine dose, while 676 people have received two doses.
