Hamilton reports 74 new COVID-19 cases and 5 new deaths this weekend

As localsprepare to enter the red zone on Monday, the novel coronavirus infected 74 more peoplein Hamilton this weekend according to public health.

Hamilton Public Health Services (HPHS) saw 28 new cases on Saturday and 46 new cases on Sunday.

HPHSalso saidfive more people who have had COVID-19 died, bringing the total to 65.

The latest victims include:

• A woman in her early 70s who died late this past week.
• A woman in her early 70s at Baywoods Place long-term care homewho died late this past week.
• A woman in her mid-70s atChartwell Willowgrove long-term care home whodied late this past week.
• A man in his late 80s atDundurn Place Care Centre who died late this past week.
• A man in his mid-80s atHamilton Continuing Care who died late thispast week.

Of the2,415 cases HPHS has confirmed since the start of the pandemic, 400 cases are active.

The city has also started publishing its reproduction number (R number).

R is the average number of people aperson with COVID-19 will infect.

Hamilton's number as of Thursday is 1.25.

New infections in care homes

There are 18 active outbreaks in the city.

One moreChartwell Willowgrovepatient has the virus. There are now 64 total cases there (39 residents, 25 staff). Baywoods Place also has one more patient with the virus bringing its total cases to 28 (16 residents, 12 staff).

The number of hospitalizations is up to 15 people and funded acute occupancy at Hamilton Health Sciences has surpassed 100 per cent.

1 new local school case

A student at Helen Detwiler Elementary School has tested positive for COVID-19. A letter to families states the student was not in the building when infectious and had no student or staff labelled as close contacts.

Hamilton is entering the red zone on Monday, which will see more restrictions set by the province.

Brant

13 new cases of COVID-19were reported over the weekendin Brant County.

The area has a total of 378confirmed cases, of which 309are resolved and 63 were active on Sunday.

Five people with the virus have died. One person is currently hospitalized.

Haldimand-Norfolk

Thirteen new cases of COVID-19 were added to the total in Haldimand-Norfolk on Sunday.

The counties have recorded 591 positive cases, 522of which are recovered and 27were active.

Thirty-two deaths are considered COVID-19 related.

Halton

Halton has reported a 102 new cases over the weekend.

There's a total of 2,929 cases of COVID-19(2,726confirmed and 143probable) during the pandemic.

Of those, 515were active on Sunday and 2,369resolved.

Ninety-threeof those active cases were in Burlington, which saw its case count rise by 13 between Saturday and Sunday.

Forty-fivepeople in the Halton region who had COVID-19 have died.

Niagara

There were 233 active cases of the virus in Niagara region on Sunday.

The areahas seen1,805 cases so far, including 1,494that are resolved.

Fourteen outbreaks are ongoing and 78 people have died.

Six Nations

There were two active cases of the virus on Six Nations of the Grand River as of Friday.

An update from health officials showed Six Nations has tallied 95 cases.

One person has died.
