With a heat warning in effect for Hamilton today, it'sgoing to be a hot Canada Day.

Environment Canada saysdaytime highs are forecast to reach the mid thirties with humidex values into the mid forties.

The agency is saying this will be the most significant heat event in the past few years.

Extreme heat affects everyone says Environment Canada, but the risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.

The weather statement advises people to watch for symptoms of heat-related illness includingswelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke andthe worsening of some health conditions.

Daytime highs in the low thirties are expected to persist through most of next week according to Environment Canada. Overnight low temperatures are expected to be in the low to mid twenties, except high teens in some rural areas, providing little or no relief from the heat.

The Medical Officer of Health for the city of Hamilton is askingfor the public to visit family, friends and neighbours, to make sure they are cool and drinking plenty of water.

The city and participating community agencies are responding to the heat by offering "cool places" to go during all stages of theheat event.
