'More significant freezing rain' in Hamilton Sunday, warns Environment Canada

Freezing rain pellets began Saturday in Hamilton and will continue to fall on Sunday, says Environment Canada in a special weather statement.

Hamiltonians can expect a "more significant freezing rain event," building up to 15 mm of ice, which is less than what was expected, the weather agency says.

"However, strong winds gusting to 70 to locally 80 km/h in combination with the ice accumulation will likely still result in many power outages due to fallen trees limbs and power lines," the statement says.

Power outages began Saturday morning in St. Catharines, affecting over 15,000 people. Residents in Stoney Creek and Hamilton were also affected by the outage.

The Ontario Provincial Police has reported there have been "numerous collisions" on the 401, 402 and 403. OPP is warning people to slow down and drive according to weather conditions.

Fallen trees and branches have also caused damage to some roads.

School and city closures

Post-secondary schools have closed their campuses because of poor weather conditions.

McMaster University has postponed exams scheduled for Saturday until April 22. The university continues to be closed on Sunday, April 15"due to inclement weather and ice."

Brock University also closed its campus on Saturday, but says it will reopen the university at noon Sunday.

Mohawk College is closed.

The City of Hamilton warns people not to drive anywhere unless absolutely necessary and to avoid parking on the street for better snow and ice removal.

"Residents should not push or shovel ice or snow into the roadway and should also ensure that fire hydrants on or near their property are kept clear," the city says in a statement.

The city says people experiencing backed up sewers or want to report fallen trees, branches on public property, flooding over roadways and debris in drainage ditches can call 905-546-2489.

HSR will run on a regular Sunday schedule, but there may be delays.

All Hamilton Public Library locations are closed until Monday. Recreation programming offered through the City of Hamilton will continue to run on a regular schedule.

Rain starting Sunday night

After the freezing rain, Hamiltonians can expect a round of rain, says Environment Canada in an additional warning.

"The rain may fall heavily at times with amounts likely in the 20 to 25 mm range," the statement says. People should expect about 25 to 35 mm of rain in total.
