Hamilton hits 108 new COVID-19 cases in a day, a new record

Hamilton recorded 108 new cases of COVID-19 Tuesday a new record for the number of daily cases.

The city is is also reporting thatsix more people who had the virus have died, raising the number of deaths to 92.

Hamilton has seen 3,266 cases (both confirmed and probable) so far, including 565 that were active Tuesday also a record.

"The numbers continue to get higher daily, and we are very concerned about the community, and our healthcare system," said public health spokesperson Jacqueline Durlov in an email.

Statistics on the city's website show 2,598 cases are recovered and 230 have been hospitalized.

There are currently 23 people with the virus in hospital.

The spike in cases comes after Dr. Elizabeth Richardson, Hamilton's medical officer of health, warned the city will"without a doubt" enter a full lockdown if cases continued to rise.

There are 19 outbreaks in the city, including one atAdelaide Hoodless Public School which was announced late Monday after two staff members tested positive.

Willowgrove becomes largest outbreak

One ongoing outbreak is at Chartwell Willowgrove where 87 people 57 residents, 28 staff members and two visitors were all infected making it the largest outbreak the city has seen during the pandemic.

Two of the deaths that were reported Tuesday were Willowgrove residents, according to public health.

One was a womanin hermid-80s who died on Nov. 28 and the other a man in his early90s who died on Nov. 29.

A spokesperson for Chartwell confirmed 17people who lived at the home andhad the virus have now died, adding the company extends its condolences.

Seventeen deaths is the most associated with a COVID-19 outbreak in Hamilton to date.

"Overcoming the COVID-19 outbreak at Chartwell Willowgrove remains our highest priority and we will continue doing everything possible to protect and support our residents working collaboratively with our health care and government partners," wrote Sharon Ranalliin an email statement, adding the company is grateful for staff's "remarkable efforts."

Ranallisaid 33 resident and 23 staff cases are considered resolved, while seven resident and four staffcases are active.

Health officials say theother deaths reported Tuesday were also people who lived at Hamilton nursing homes.

A man in his late80s from Hamilton Continuing Care died on Nov. 28, as did aman from Baywoods Place Long Term Care Home who was in his late 70s.

A woman from Grace Villa in her late80s died on Nov. 29 and a man in his early90s at St. Joseph's Villa died on Nov. 30.

Niagara

There are 207 active cases in Niagara Tuesday.

The region has recorded 2,161 over the course of the pandemic, of which 1,870 are resolved.

Eighty-four people have died and 18 outbreaks are ongoing.

Haldimand Norfolk

Haldimand and Norfolk have seen 55 more cases of COVIDover the past two weeks.

The counties have tallied 660 positive cases as of Tuesday.

Of those, 580 were recovered and 43 active.

Thirty-two deaths are considered COVID-related.

Six Nations

The most recent update from Six Nations of the Grand River showed one active case as of Nov. 28, while 97 were resolved.

One person who had the virus has died.

Brant

Six people with COVID-19 in Brant County and Brantford are currently in hospital.

The area has reported 513 confirmed cases, including 70 that were active Tuesday and 438 that were resolved.

Data from the health unit shows cases were reported within the past 24 hours.

Five people have died.

Halton

Fifty-two more cases were added to Halton's countfor a total of 3,729 (confirmed and probable) on Tuesday.

Fourteen of those new cases were in Burlington, which has seen 890 cases so far.

There are774 were active and 2,890 resolved cases across the region.

Sixty-five people have died.
