COVID-19 outbreak at Shalom Village in Hamilton sees 24 new cases, 1 more death

The outbreak atShalom Village Nursing Home in Hamilton has grownby 24 COVID-19cases as other outbreaks also continue to see the virus spread.

The outbreak atShalom Village Nursing Home in Hamilton has grownby 24 COVID-19cases as other outbreaks also continue to see the virus spread.

Hamilton Public Health Services (HPHS) reported on Tuesday afternoon the outbreak has reached72 people (42 residents, 29 staff and one visitor).

HPHS also confirmed aman in his 80s who was staying at the home died one of two new deaths.

The other victim is awoman in her early 90s atSt. Joseph's Villa, where 49 people have been infected (33 residents, 16 staff). That means 121 people with the virus have died.

Some of the other 21local outbreaks also grew:

  • Grace Villa has 177 cases (118 residents, 59 staff), four more since Monday.
  • Chartwell Willowgrovehas 100 cases (63 residents, 35 staff, two visitors), five more since Monday.
  • Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre has 62 cases (30 patients, 30 staff, two visitors), 10 more since Monday's report.
  • Baywoods Place has 46 cases (26residents, 20 staff), two more since Monday.
  • Idlewyld Manor has24 cases(13 residents, 11 staff),two more since Monday.
  • Sterling Honda has 9 cases, all staff, which istwo more than Monday.
  • Amica Stoney Creek Retirement Home has two cases, all staff, which is one more since Monday.

The latest outbreak is atImmaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Elementary School.

55 new cases in Hamilton as active cases drop

HPHS data recorded 55 more positive COVID-19 tests, bringing the total number of cases since the start of the pandemic to 4,368.

There are 20 fewer active cases, with 779 on Tuesday and the number of COVID-19 patients in hospital fell from 53 to 49.

Almost one in five positive tests arefrompeople in their 20s, according to the data.

3 Franco's No Frills employees test positive

Three Franco's No Frillsemployees at the Queenston Road store are infected with the virus.

Loblaw states thelast day the team members worked was on Dec.5, Dec. 6 and Dec.9. Public health hasn't declared an outbreak there.

"In these cases, we work closely with public health and follow their guidance to ensure proper notification of close contacts and required cleaning and sanitization in our stores," reads a message on the Loblaw website.

"In all of our stores, we encourage our colleagues and employees to wear masks, particularly where physical distancing is not always possible."

62 new COVID-19 cases in Niagara

Niagara saw 62 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, bringing the total to 2,672.

Of those, 89 people who had the virus have died, while 2,181 cases have been resolved.

There are 402 active cases in the region and 20 outbreaks are ongoing.

This comes as Niagara Health, the hospital network in the Niagara region, is dealing with three separate outbreaks.

Outbreak at Walmart in Brantford

The Brant County Health Unit (BCHU) has declared a COVID-19 outbreak at the Walmart Supercentre on King George Rd.

BCHU states two employees tested positive.

CBC News has reached out to Walmart for comment.

Brant and Brantford have reported 22 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total to 674.

There are 105 active cases and 564 that are resolved.

Eighteen new cases have been recorded in the area in the past 24 hours.

Five people who were infected have died. One person remains in hospital.

Haldimand-Norfolk

There are three new COVID-19 cases in Haldimand and Norfolk counties.

There have been 737 confirmed cases since March, including 51 that are active and 648 that are recovered.

Complications from the infection have killed 33 people according to the health unit.

Halton

Sixty more cases of COVID-19 were recorded in Halton on Monday.

The region had seen 4,612 cases, of which 364 were active, while 4,164 were resolved.

Eighty-four people in Halton have died after being infected with the virus.

One of those deaths was a resident at the Chartwell Lakeshore Retirement Home in Burlington. An outbreak there has infected 21 residents and five staff.

Six Nations

One person in Six Nations of the Grand River has COVID-19. It is the 100th case in the territory since the pandemic.

One person who had the virus has died since March.
