4 dead in one day after suspected fentanyl overdoses in Brantford

Brantford police say four people died of suspected overdoses in one day last week, prompting it to issue a safety alert.

Police said two others were treated in hospital that day and in all cases they suspect fentanyloverdoses.

Officers say they, along with paramedics, responded to calls on Fri., Jan. 10 between 7:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. in Brantford.

Four men, from ages 26 to 38, all suspected of taking drugs mixed with fentanyl.

In thesafety notice to the public, officers urge residents to administer Naloxone and call emergency services if they fear someone is overdosing.

It cautions that while Naloxone can temporarily reverse the effects of an overdose, it can wear off before a person has recovered.

They say anyone who does use drugs should never use alone, start with a small amount, avoid mixing substances, use drugs where help is accessible and make a plan in case of an overdose.

The signs of an overdosed person include:

• Can't stay awake

• No strength or energy

• Cold, clammy skin

• Slow heartbeat

• Trouble breathing

• Slow, shallow breathing

• Gurgling or snoring sounds

• Blue or purple lips and/or fingernails

• Non-responsive to shouting
