Truck travelling too fast in Highway 63 crash

A vehicle that crashed on Highway 63 last week, killing two men, was travelling too fast for road conditions at the time, Alberta RCMP said Monday.

Jason Mark Maye, 32, of Monkstown, N.L., lost control of his pickup truck north of Fort McMurray on Friday morning, crossed the icy roadway and struckan oncoming truck. He and his passenger, Patrick LeClerc, 24, of Kirkland Lake, Ont., died in the collision.

The male driver of the other vehicle was treated in hospital for lower body injuries but was released the same day, said police.

Highway 63 is the main link between Edmonton and the booming oilsands developments in northern Alberta. The accident happened at the turnoff to the Suncor plant.

Political leaders and labour leaders from the area have been lobbying for years to get the highway widened to four lanes.

In December, three people died in separate crashes along the highway.
