Waterspout spotted above Cold Lake, says Environment Canada

A tornado warning issued Friday evening for parts of northern Alberta has ended.

The tornado warning was in place for Improvement District 349 including Cold Lake Air Weapons Range, Environment Canada said.

It was downgraded by Environment Canada to a severe thunderstorm warning at 6:47 p.m.

A waterspout was spotted rotating overCold Lake on Friday evening, Environment Canada officials confirmed.

"This rotation was not evident on Doppler radar imagery, which is quite common with waterspouts. So we're led to believe it is a waterspout,"Darrell Smith with Environment Canada said.

"Also reports have suggested the rotation has only existed over the lake so as soon as it hit land, it quickly dissipated."

Smith says waterspouts often leave little to no damage, whereas a tornado can bring strong winds, has a strong rotationand can last longer.

No damage or injuries from the waterspouthave beenreportedas of Friday evening, Smith said.
