Murder charge laid after northern Alberta man dies of suspicious injuries

A 30-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of a man admitted to hospital in High Level Friday with suspicious injuries.

On Friday, police were called to the hospital in High Level after Jordan Laboucan, 22,of North Tallcree was admitted with injuries consistent with blunt force trauma, RCMP said in a news release Monday.

On the same day, the accused was arrested near the crime scene at the South TallcreeFirst Nation, RCMP said.

On Saturday, investigators with the RCMP's major crime unit took over the case as Laboucan's condition began deteriorating.

Laboucan died of his injuries after being transferred to the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton. An autopsy to confirm the cause of death has been scheduled for Monday, police said.

The accused has since been charged with one count of second-degree murder. He is due in provincial court in Fort Vermilion on Tuesday.

Forensic units have been involved in examining the scene at SouthTallcreeFirst Nation, and gathering evidence in the process,RCMPsaid.

Seven reserves make up the Tallcree First Nation, which is locatednear Fort Vermilion, about 650 kilometres north of Edmonton.
