Worker killed at Syncrude oilsands plant north of Fort McMurray

A contract worker was killedSunday night at an oilsands plant, Syncrude Canada reported in a news release Monday.

A contract worker was killedSunday night at an oilsands plant, SyncrudeCanada reported in a news release Monday.

Emergency crews responded toreports of an incident at Syncrude's Auroramine site involving a contract worker at 9:30 p.m.Sunday.

The worker could not be revived, therelease said.

On Tuesday, a spokesperson forLabour and Immigration said the victim was a 45-year-old man who worked for Cross Border Consulting Ltd. The worker died after he was pinned in core sampling machinery.

"This is devastating news for all of us at Syncrude," Steve Yatauro, senior vice-president, production, said in the release Monday."The safety and well-being of ouremployees and contractors is always our top concern."

The worker was doing winter drilling work when the incident happened, a Syncrude spokesperson confirmed on Tuesday.

The company said itis working with the RCMP and Alberta Occupational Health and Safety as well as conducting its own investigation.

No other workers were injured in theincident.

The Aurora mineis 80 kilometres north of Fort McMurray.
