Worker killed at Fort Hills oilsands mine north of Fort McMurray

A worker is dead following an incident Monday at a Suncor oilsands mine in northern Alberta.

Occupational Health and Safety investigators dispatched to the site Monday night

A worker is dead following a "light-vehicle accident" Monday at a Suncor oilsands mine in northern Alberta.

The man was killed Monday afternoon at the Fort Hills site, about 90 kilometres north of Fort McMurray.

Occupational Health and Safety said it was notified and investigators were dispatchedto the scene Monday night.

OHS spokesperson VivianBinnematold CBC News the accident is under investigation but provided no additional details.

Ledcorspokesperson DavidHoffsaid the man killed was one of the company's employees. The man was killed while doing maintenance work at theSuncorsite,Hoffsaid.

LedcorandSuncorare conducting investigations into the incident, he said.

Ledcoris offering grief counselling to affected workers and has been in contact with the man'sfamily.

Hoffwould not provide details on the man's age or hometown.

"It's a very sad day for Ledcor, tragic day," Hoffsaid.

"Work was stopped yesterday and we are all focusing on people today, supporting the people who were involved as much as possible."

Fort Hills is an open-pit truck and shovelmine about 525 kilometres north of Edmonton.
