Outspoken Alta. MLA Sherman seeks re-election

Outspoken Edmonton MLA Raj Sherman is planning to run in the next provincial election, saying he is still intent to fix the health-care system.

The emergency room doctor, who once sat as the government's parliamentary assistant to the Minister of Health and Wellness, was ousted from the Conservative caucus last fall after criticizinghis own party's handling ofemergency-room wait times in Alberta.

His decision to run again in the next provincial election was necessary, he said, because his health care policy mission is not over.

"So I can't leave yet," he said. "We've got a lot of good work and some things that weren't so good. At least in the legislature, it's a chance to voice in the legislature what needs to be done in health care."

Sherman currently sits as an Independent. Although he said he has spoken to all three Opposition leaders, he said he has not yet settled on which party he will run for.

"That's the challenge I've had with the party system and the way things work now currently, and the challenge that the party that I ran for had with me," he said.

"They demand blind loyalty, even if it's something you don't agree with."

Sherman said he will likely decide on a party to run for within the next two months.
