Midwives are now regulated in Alberta.

Midwives offically became a regulated profession in Alberta on Jan. 1 with the establishment of their own professional college.

A change to provincial legislation last month allowed for the creation of the College of Midwives of Alberta.

Alberta began covering the cost of midwifery services in 2009. There are now 70 registered midwives in the province.
