May 20, 1984: Oilers fans celebrate in the streets

Downtown Edmonton is a buzz of activity these days, as the Oilers prepare to move into Rogers Place this fall.

But the team created a different kind of buzz 32 years ago, as CBC's Steve Andrusiak reported.

The Oilers won their first Stanley Cup on May 19, 1984. The win came just five years after the team joined the NHL an astonishing featand the party that followed was just as impressive.

Downtown streets were flooded with hockey fans decked in orange and blue.

Then there was the red and blue flashing from city police cars tasked with managing the crowd. But no arrests were made, even though rejoicers rocked a city busat one point.

The party kept going through several more Stanley Cup wins, but the spontaneity of the that celebration remains a unique snapshot in Edmonton's history.
