Heavy snow and freezing rain warnings issued across Alberta

Much of Alberta is under a winter storm warning Saturday, with heavy and blowing snow as well as freezing rain forecastto start overnight.

The cause of the potentially-turbulent weather is a low pressure system moving into the province from British Columbia.

Patches of freezing rain are expected to hit Grande Prairie, Whitecourt and Rocky Mountain House Saturday morning before moving eastward in the early afternoon.

Heavy snow is expected to fall on the northwest province Sunday morning, hitting Edmonton in the evening before tracking southeast into central Alberta.

The system is expected to dump between 15 and 25 centimetres of snow, with some areas seeing more than 30 centimetres.

According to Environment Canada, Monday will see strong northerly winds across much of central and southern Alberta gusting up to 60 km/h.

The Arctic high will usher in colder temperatures, dropping to minus 20 degrees on Tuesday.

While Environment Canada says there is still some uncertainty about the exact track of the predicted storm system, it is urging Albertans to monitor weather conditions and prepare accordingly.
