Edmonton Institution inmates hospitalized after drug overdoses

Several inmates at Edmonton's maximum security prison were sent to hospital Wednesday with drug overdoses.

Several inmates at Edmonton's maximum security prison were sent to hospital Wednesday with drug overdoses.

Acting deputy warden Mark Otto said "a number of overdoses" were discovered during regular security checks inoneunit at the Edmonton Institution.

He would not say how many inmates were involved but saidsome were taken to hospital to address medical concerns.

Otto said prison staffhaven't yet determinedwhat drug the inmates used. Officials arewaiting for toxicology tests.

The prison wasput into modified lockdownwhileguards searched for narcotics.
