Drivers stalled as flash floods close part of Yellowhead

Long lines of commuters clogged Yellowhead Trail Monday morning afterflash floodsovernight forced the city to close part of the road.

The westbound lanes of Yellowhead Trail were closed at St Albert Trail, due to heavy rains last night.

A deep rut surrounded by large chunks of pavement could be seen on the road.

Starting Tuesday morning at 9 a.m., Yellowhead Trail westbound will be reduced to one lane between 127th Street and 142nd Street to allow crews to make emergency repairs.

Brad Vanderhoek with traffic operations said that intense rain caused the same section of road to close in June.

"The two sort of big storms we've had this year it's been unusual they've been in the northwest part of the city," he said.

"Historically, we've had more challenges on Whitemud Drive with heavy rainfall so it's a bit unusual that it's happened on Yellowhead/St. Albert Trail twice in the same season."

The Stadium LRT station also flooded on Sunday night. While the escalator and elevator are out of service, the station was open on Monday.

ETS staff are helping disabled people find a way to board trains.
