City worker trapped between conveyor and tunnel wall, OHS says

The city worker killed inside an underground sewage tunnel this week was crushed when a heavy piece of equipment, a conveyor, was being moved, says Occupational Health and Safety.

The city worker killedin an underground sewage tunnelthis week was crushed whena heavy piece of equipment, a conveyor,was being moved, says OccupationalHealth and Safety.

"One of the workers was trapped between the tunnel wall and the conveyor," said spokesman Andrew Hanon.

The 44-year-old man was declared dead at the sitenear the corner ofEllerslieRoad and142ndStreet on Tuesday afternoon.

The site has since been returned to the city, though a stop work order remains in place.

Theaccident was the first of two fatal workplace deaths in the province this week.

A 35-year-old worker was killed in atanker explosion in the Burnt Lake Industrial Park near Red Deer on Thursday.

Hanon said the explosion is being investigated by the federal department of Employment, Workforce Development and Laboursince it occurred at an inter-provincial transport operation.
