ATV rides injured 38 kids since May, says AHS

Alberta Health Services (AHS) is reminding the public that children under 16 should not be driving all terrain vehicles.

The AHS said thatat least 38 children in the province have been injured on ATVssince May; 14 were hospitalized and two have died.

"Those are deaths that actually shouldn't happen," said Dr, Chris Sukora with AHS.

"Children, especially those under 16, who are riding all terrain vehicles lack much of the time, the judgment, the skill set, the strength necessary to control a motor vehicle of that size and that weight."

More than forty per cent of ATV-rider deaths in Alberta have been caused by head injuries. AHS said all drivers should be wearing helmets at all times.
