Alberta looks for new ways to build schools

Alberta's Education Minister says the government is looking at new ways to determine where schools are built in the province.

Alberta's Education Minister says the government is looking at new ways to determine where schools are built in the province.

Recently, parents in Edmonton have complained about crowded schools in the city's newest neighbourhoods.

Although no election has been called yet in the province, Alberta Education Minister Thomas Lukaszuk and other provincial candidates were in Edmonton Saturday for a debate on education. (Scott Lilwall/CBC )

They said some new schools in the city are full as soon as they are opened.

Education Minister Thomas Lukaszuk said there are things that can be done to ease overcrowding, but they're not permanent solutions.

"Simply attaching portables is not the solution," he said. "One of the issues we have in this province is we have schools where we dont have kids, and kids where we dont have schools. And that's one of the things I want to address in the next few years."

Lukaszuk and other provincial candidates were in Edmonton Saturday for a debate on education.
