Vulcan County wildfire under control, officials say

An emergency alert was issued Thursday afternoon in Vulcan County due to a "serious" wildfire heading toward Gleichen and Cluny.

Emergency alert was issued Thursday afternoon warning residents to prepare for possible evacuation

A large grassfire burningin Vulcan Countyon Thursday has been contained.

The fire was threateningthe village of Arrowwood, as well as Gleichen and the hamlet of Cluny.

Alberta'semergency alert systemissued a notice around 3 p.m. warning residents to prepare for possible evacuation.

An hour later, however,Vulcan County said fire crews believed they had the blaze under control.

Firefighters remain on standby in Gleichenas a precaution.

The RCMP had been evacuating homes south of the Bow River as a precaution.

Gleichenis about100 kilometres east-southeast of Calgary.
