Festivals, music and history: What to do this long weekend in Calgary

We're heading into another warm and sunny long-weekend in Calgary. If you're not heading out of town, you may be looking for a few entertainment ideas to get you out of the house.

Fringe Festival

Calgary's Fringe Festival takes over Inglewood and a few downtown satellite venues for the next nine days. It features more than 32 local, nationaland international performers this year, ranging from physical theatre to sketch comedy, improv to drama, storytelling to puppetry, and monologues to musicals.

Tickets max out at $15, with plenty going for even less and every dime you pay goes back to the artists. Most of the shows are only an hour long, with most venues within easy walking distance of each other.

Inglewood Sunfest

If you're heading to Inglewood on Saturday, you might as well swing by Sunfest, which is happening from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.Drivers can expect 9th Avenue to be closedbecause itis going to be packed with classic cars, street performers, bands and so much more.

Franco Festival

Franco Festivalis about all the multiculturalism in Calgary's Francophone community, featuring music, dance, food and crafts from Africa, Europe, Asia, South America and home.

The mainstage will be just outside the Bridgeland Riverside Community Association. There are also a few kick-off events on Friday night.

Kensington Summertime Outdoor Movies

It's absolutely the season for drive-in movies or in this case, walk-up movies.The third annual Kensington Summertime Outdoor Movies series starts this Saturday night with a classic.

The Breakfast Club is playing for free on Saturday night. Break out your festival chair or throw down a blanket in the parking lot beside Purr Clothing. The movie starts at 9 p.m. and there's free hot chocolate and iced tea.

Tour de Bowness

The Tour de Bowness isa three-race omnium event starting on Saturday with a 22-kilometre road race in Cochrane, then continues Sunday with a 1-km hill climb on Mackay Road in northwest Calgary. It ends with a short-circuit speed race,called the Criterium, in Bowness on Monday.

Historic Calgary Week

Monday is Heritage Day, so why not leave the house and repeat a little bit of history with the fine folks running Historic Calgary Week? The week-long celebration wraps-up on Monday with one final morning talk at Heritage Park. It's about theCRP Colonist railcar they're restoring.

There's also a day-long celebration at Fort Calgary, where you will have a chance to try on the Mountie uniform, among various other family-friendly activities.

Heritage Day Festival

If you're in the mood for free, then head to Olympic Plaza for the 40th annual Heritage Day Festival. From noon to 6 p.m., enjoy multicultural performances, ethnic foods, unique handicrafts, face painting, bouncy castles and so much more.

Calgary's International Blues Festival

This is one of those weekends where music fans have more options than they can possibly get to.Calgary's International Blues Festivalhas been going strong all week and wraps up on Sunday.

The mainstage is set up at Shaw Millennium Park. After 9 p.m., you can walk over to the Kirby Centre for Blues into the wee hours of the morning.

Chasing Summer

If blues isn't your style, then how about electronic music? Chasing Summer is back this year at the Max Bell Centre's festival grounds on Saturday and Sunday.Headliners include Tiesto,Zedd, Vancouver's The Funk Hunters and many more.
