Vandals spray paint former home of the Lougheed family.

Some Calgarians living near Lougheed House are upset after vandals sprayed graffiti on the historic home.

Sometime over the weekend, someone scaled the heritage mansion on 13th Avenue southwest and tagged the roof, a chimney and an east-facing sandstone wall.

Neighbours interviewed by CBC News called the damage upsetting and disrespectful, adding that graffiti is a growing problem in the area.

Blane Hogue, executive director of Lougheed House, said the damage is not related to the recent death of former premier Peter Lougheed.

"Its terrible. When we first saw this on Sunday morning it was just a feeling of loss. Why would anybody want to deface this terribly important monument?"

Cleanup was underway Monday.

Lougheed House, also known as Beaulieu, was built by Senator James Alexander Lougheed, the former premiers grandfather.
