Twin Falls hiker in Yoho National Park believed dead

Parks Canada is leading a recovery effort in Yoho National Park for a Calgary man who was swept over a waterfall.

A19-year-old Calgary man hasdied after falling over a 100-metrewaterfall while hiking in British Columbia, according to Parks Canada.

The young man fell over Twin Falls inYoho National Park early Sunday afternoon while hiking in a group of four,ParksCanadaspokespersonTania Peters said.

Rescuers rushed to the site just west of the Alberta border after receivingan emergency signal from a satellite device around 1 p.m. MT.

An aerial and ground searchcontinued untildark on Sunday and then searchers resumed the task earlyMonday morning.

Recovery effort

Peters said the man is believed dead andthe search is now considered a recovery effort.

Twin Falls is about an eight-kilometre hike from the Takakkaw Falls parking lot, which is locatednext tothe Trans-Canada Highway, just east of Field, B.C.

Peters said the man was hiking in what's believed to be a "family group" on the Whaleback Trail.

"It's certainly an incredibly sad situation," she said.
