Special needs kids return to camp after evacuation

Children have returned to a special needs camp following a warning of a hazardous materials leak in Kananaskis Country.

Easter Seals Camp Horizon evacuated the camp, which was hosting 55 children,to the Bragg Creek Community Centre Friday afternoon.

A provincialalert for "a hazardous materials release with a potential for threatening life and the environment"was issued at about 12:30 p.m. MT for Highway 66 near the camp and the McLean Creek Public Land Use Zone.

Nearly two hours later, police reopened the highway and the children returned to camp.

"It was soon discovered that the gas smell came from a large 3,000-pound propane tank that was in the river as a result of the flood. Emergency personnel determined the situation to be safe, Highway 66 was reopened and the campers allowed back in the camps.Emergency personnel on scene is currently salvaging the propane tank," police said in a release.

Easter Seals Camp Horizon is a special needs camp that caters to disabled adults and children. The camp was alsoevacuated last month due to flooding.
